Greeting

A little about me...
I continue to grow and learn. I try to live in the present, for I understand (finally!) that I can't undo the past nor control the future. I try to appreciate each experience, whether painful or joyful, and to express gratitude for the opportunity to have lived it. I realize that nothing is perfect—no person (including me), no relationship, no job—and accepting things (especially people) the way they are has, in recent years, become the key to my achieving a level of serenity.

I enjoy spending time with and getting to know other people, but I also value being alone. True friendship is something I treasure. Hurting other people—anyone, but especially those I'm close to—is something I avoid at virtually all costs. “Love means never having to say you're sorry” may be the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.

I really enjoyed my career as a book and magazine editor, and I found great satisfaction in what I accomplished in my work. Now, however, I'm considering a graduate degree and an entirely different career.

I'm emotional—touched and sometimes moved by what I see, hear, and feel. Openness comes easily to me, perhaps because I'm convinced that it's so terribly important. Genuine respect and honesty are qualities I honor.

About the one I'm looking for...
I'd like to spend time with—and develop a relationship with—a woman who is fundamentally comfortable with herself but who, at the same time, is open to continued growth and change. It would be nice if she shared some of my interests and/or outlook on life, but that's not critical.

Understanding, respecting, accepting, and appreciating who I am—and, especially, who she is—are far more important.

All my relationships—whether they have involved friends, family members, lovers, or a spouse—have required effort, but Id like to be in one that isn't a constant struggle. “Walking on eggshells” is a tough way to live. Flexibility and compromise are, for me, a far more comfortable path. I'd like to find someone who truly enjoys fun and frivolity (I have an outrageous sense of humor and love to laugh).

At the same time, I am drawn to those who can share and appreciate serious moments. “Communication” is a hopelessly overused word, but its validity in a relationship is beyond question; I want to find a woman who can grow to trust me enough to share virtually everything that she is thinking and feeling, even when that's difficult.

I'd just like to add...
I've explored Scotland twice (and want to go back). I have also fished and/or sailed in Alaska, Belize, the Yucatan, and especially the Bahamas. New Zealand is a dream destination.

I truly enjoy cooking for others, snuggling, giving presents when they're least expected, slow dancing in the living room, and laughing together.

I read a lot, both fiction and nonfiction. John Updike and Barbara Kingsolver are among my favorite authors.

My musical tastes are insanely eclectic, ranging from country to classical. My favorite recording artist is probably Bonnie Raitt.

I'm passionate about Labrador retrievers, which I have owned, trained, field-trialed, and hunted with for 35 years. My current dog is a 12-year-old black female named Star.

P.S. I allow myself four cigarettes a day—outdoors—simply because I enjoy them. Is this sensible and wise? No. Can I justify it? No.

I NEVER smoke in my house (or anyone else’s), nor do I EVER smoke in the presence of anyone who objects. I NEVER smoke on dates. Neither my clothing, nor my breath, nor my hair, nor my car smells like cigarettes.

Would I give up the four cigarettes a day if I were in a long-term relationship and my partner asked me to? Absolutely.
